Taken from the maritime term for a harbor where trade takes place.
- A transfer of a program from one environment (usually an operating system, architecture) to another. As in: "to transfer."
- A way of separating TCP/IP transmissions to the same IP Address to different programs. As in: "a specific part of the dock." This separation is standardized and specific numbers are reserved for certain types of programs (such as FTP is 21 and HTTP is 80). Port numbers can be anywhere from 0 to 65536. The ports 0 through 1024 are priveleged to root. The port numbers are divided into 3 ranges: the Well Known Ports, the Registered Ports, and the Dynamic and/or Private Ports. The Well Known Ports are those from 0 through 1023. The Registered Ports are those from 1024 through 49151. The Dynamic and/or Private Ports are those from 49152 through 65535. Ports are assigned officially by IANA.
